A Note of Disappointment

Was anyone else slightly dissatisfied with our discussion of The Book Thief? Just wondering......

I thought we were doing book clubs, as in groups of four or five people, and that discussing the book as a whole class made it too much of an academic class discussion led by a teacher. I had been looking forward to sitting with a few other people and just talking about what we all liked or didn't like about the book, etc. Having the whole class involved in one conversation sucked a lot of the momentum and personality from it, I thought.

Why were you disappointed?

I was disappointed as well. First off I thought having a different leader than we are used to (Wendy) put us all on edge. We feel comfortable in the community we created and it being our subs first meeting with us made the discussion feel useless to me. I felt like the book wasn't her choice, now I feel like it wasn't Wendy's either but I was looking forward to the discussion being about why we liked the book or not. Instead the conversation hindged on whether it was teachable and how we would differentiate the teaching of the book to suit the students. I don't know, just wasn't feelin' it. Now I'm not feelin' Alaska and not looking forward to that discussion.
